Raining season can bring lots of toxins and pathogens in water.
Charcoal is used basically in water management to remove toxins like fluorine etc which is in most borehole waters that affects fry.
It also helps manage odour from water
Charcoal helps to purify water and you only need to throw in chunks of it into water and remove periodically (best after every 2weeks depends on water usage
But if the charcoal is ACTIVATED to become activated charcoal then it's very very effective for water management (filtration) to make it very very safe for fry grow out n broodstock
Get hardwood charcoal preferably from an edible tree.
Wash off all ash residue.
Break it up into smaller pieces. Wash it again for all dust to clear
Get a big bowl and pour your charcoal into it
Add calcium chloride or lemon/lime juice(use lime/lemon juice since its common on our market). Let it cover half of the level of the charcoal
Add water till it covers the charcoal. (Water/lemon juice ratio should be 1:1)
Keep the mixture covered for 24 hrs.
Drain the water and wash it completely with water again.
Pour it into a cooking pot and put on fire.
Let it heat till almost or all the water has evaporated from the charcoal(keep it covered) so the carbon is trapped in it...at least 3hrs cooking will be ok
Remove from fire, wash off all ash and let it cool under shade till its completely dry
Then finally, grind it into fine powder and store in an airtight bottle. Use as needed. Can be stored indefinitely if the bottle is airtight.
It can also be used as fish pond filter media...it should be changed monthly if being used for fish ponds
It's usually used in rate of 5kg to every 4000liters of 🚿 but in extreme cases it's 10kg
It removes pond sludge especially noted at bottom of ponds or tanks for those using local formulation.
In algal bloom it reduces substances that allow algae to grow faster .In combination with clarified you achieve maximum results but using domesticated water hyacinth also does very good
It's also a neutralizer whereby it removes chemicals in water but not the source
It neutralizes heavy organic chemicals including chlorine. Removes tannin from pond water which causes gradual discoloration.. Tannin is usually brown and leaks from debris like grass, leaves, pollen grains and get into ponds but activated charcoal is effective as it won't cause you to remove water unlike if you have to do without it
It helps fish growth especially if your stocking density is high as it drastically reduces and removes pheromone that comes out of fish which affects fish growth
It's best NOT to use during chemical or antibiotics treatments as it renders them ineffective.Use after treatment
It's ability is centered on chemical reaction or adsorption and NOT absorption
Adsorption is adhesion of atoms of a substance to the surface of the carbon itself. It's highly porous. Its neutralizer effect doesn't affect pond water balance and adds NO NEGATIVE substances back into system as a by-product
It's BEST to place under strong water flow inside a mesh filter. Best to replace every two months
